Mediation Explained
Principles
How It Works
Success
Your Role

Voluntary – Mediation acknowledges your right to freely participate in (and likewise, withdraw from) the mediation process, and enter any agreement reached in that process.

Self-Determination – Mediation allows you to define those issues, interests and suggestions for resolution that are meaningful to you, and directly contribute to the terms of any agreement reached in mediation.

Neutrality - Mediators are unbiased and hold no favor or opinion as to the parties’ issues, interests or the outcome. Further, mediators do not represent any party. They are also not decision-makers.

Confidentiality – Information shared in mediation is not to be shared by the parties or the mediator outside the mediation. Accordingly, the participants feel safe in sharing information that may help reach resolution. An exception lies where information obtained in the course of the mediation concerns abuse or the planned commission of a crime.
